Healthy children learn better
Health and wellbeing is everyone’s business. By embedding it in your school culture, you will have happier, healthy students achieving better outcomes and happy, healthy teachers and staff supporting students to reach their full potential!
Healthy young people learn more effectively. By creating a healthy learning environment you’re helping students make the most of their education. Instilling healthy habits in young people during their formative years not only boosts their health and learning potential, it sets them up for a lifetime of good health. The Achievement Program also recognises the importance of having healthy staff – by signing up, you’re boosting the wellbeing of everyone in the school.
A health promoting school approach is broader than implementing some health and wellbeing activities – although these are important. It involves integrating health in planning and policies, creating a healthy culture and environment, and involving the whole school – students, staff, teachers and families in the process. Forging partnerships with the local community is also important.
Through the Achievement Program, health and wellbeing becomes embedded in your culture – a part of everyday school life.
The Achievement Program
The Achievement Program provides simple, evidence-based framework to create a healthy learning environment and support the health and wellbeing of everyone in your school. Help students develop to their full potential and boost staff productivity – at any age, healthy people perform better.
Developed by the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Education and Training, the initiative can be easily incorporated into your strategic and annual planning and self-evaluation processes. Further, implementing the Achievement Program is a great way to enhance student engagement and wellbeing outcomes.
Even if you’re already doing great things to promote health and wellbeing at your school, the Achievement Program helps you build on this, and achieve recognition from the Victorian Government as a Healthy School.
The Achievement Program is based on the World Health Organization’s model for health promoting schools, an internationally recognised best practice approach for enhancing health, learning and development outcomes.
Quick start guide
The Achievement Program quick start guide (1 MB) provides a quick and easy summary of what is required at each stage of the Achievement Program. You might find it useful for explaining what’s involved. It’s more than just an introduction to the Achievement Program – it also points you to more detailed information and tools, so you can use it from registration to recognition.
Learn from others
Launching in 2012, the Achievement Program is a relatively new initiative, yet already participants are seeing benefits. Visit the Achievement Program Case Study page to see the healthy changes that other schools are making, including some insights from local school Red Cliffs Secondary College.
In 2016, with a focus on the Healthy Eating and Oral Health priority area Healthy Together Mildura has been working in partnership with school canteen managers across Sunraysia. With an aim to increase the range of healthy canteen menu options offered in school settings and sharing recipes, resources and new ideas we have created our very own Healthy School Canteen Recipe Collection. All recipes included in this collection are canteen made recipes from our very own local school canteen managers.
Our local school canteen managers have been busy in the past 12 months trying to promote a healthy eating culture at their respective schools. Local school Chaffey Secondary College was the recipient of a $300 Healthy School Canteens Incentive offered by Healthy Together Mildura. They made some tremendous healthy changes to their canteen menu and continued to make a profit. They have shared their insights and learning from this opportunity via a case study. Healthy Children Learn Better
A healthy environment helps children learn, play and reach their full potential. The Achievement Program gives schools a framework, tools and resources to create a healthy environment. Watch the videos below to find out more.
Children are meant to be active! Physically active children are healthier, happier and more socially connected than children who have more sedentary lifestyles. Healthy Together Mildura has been working with local Schools and Early Years Services to support and encourage increased active transport for students and parents.
In response to consultation with schools in 2012/2013 regarding a growing awareness that many students were going to school most days without eating breakfast, Healthy Together Mildura developed a program to support school breakfast programs in our region.
Healthy Together Mildura have put together newsletter inserts which align with the Achievement Program priority areas.
These inserts are easily accessible via Dropbox to assist schools with health and wellbeing content for their newsletters.
Please click on the priority areas below for access to the newsletter inserts.
